RESOLUTIONS

You have already figured out that resolutions are way overrated. You make them and then you break them - just like promises. Resolutions always have a short shelf life yet we keep making them expecting permanent results. The only thing valuable about a resolution is the derivation of the word. Resolution comes from the word “resolve.” If you break that word into two syllables, you get re-solve. We attempt to re-solve this annual puzzle of how to get ourselves to make a permanent change. The difficulty we run into is trying to solve the problem consciously. We didn't get the problem consciously and it won't be solved consciously. Did you consciously plan to go up two pants or dress sizes? I think not - yet you did put on the weight.  Did you consciously plan to become disorganized? No, yet the mess continues to pile up.

Here's something you can do that is more effective than all the resolving and affirming put together. Get a pad of paper and write down everything you want to accomplish in relation to your resolution. Write until you can't think of another thing. Then go back over your writing and look for all the “fluff” words. Fluff is something you can’t put into a wheelbarrow – like “good.” “I want a good job.” What does “good” mean? “I want to get in better shape.” What do you specifically mean by better? Find all the fluff words and find out what they really mean to you.

So, after you’ve written everything you can think of as to what you want to accomplish and you’ve busted up the fluff, now reduce this pile of writing down to about 25 words or less. Then look it over. One word or phrase will pop right off the page at you or ring in your ear or you’ll get a special feeling about it in your gut. Write down that word or phrase. This word or phrase is shorthand for everything you want to accomplish. Carry that phrase around in your purse or wallet and bring it out and look at it several times a day. Just the process of doing that will impress upon your other-than-conscious mind what it is that you want to accomplish. Please take that word or phrase to bed with you. It will impress upon your entire consciousness what you want to accomplish while you sleep.

Doing this exercise for about 21 days will get you much further along that you’ll ever get with a standard conscious resolution. This method involves your entire mind and not just your intellect. It’s very powerful and effective and you can begin right now.
