HOPE

When people use the word “Hope,” I am reminded of the words of business consultant, Fernando Flores who said: “Hope is the raw material for losers.” Doesn’t that sound harsh, blasphemous and counter to everything we have been taught? And, also, doesn’t it sound accurate? I wonder if there is a way to balance the polarities. That will be my mission in this newsletter because I “hope” to find an answer that will work for both philosophies.

I think hope is a starting point towards the things we desire. Past that, it’s not very useful. In fact, it’s downright indulgent if you continue hoping once you’ve received a target to shoot for. You may say, “I hope I find the person of my dreams.” And then, magically, they may appear across the street. Now what are you going to do? Are you going to hope that they notice you? Hope that they bump into you and immediately recognizes all that you have to offer? Hope that they ask you out? You can see where this is going. If you continue to hope, you are hopeless.

So what does Flores mean by his straight-forward and abrupt assertion? My guess is he’s talking more about action. Because if you don’t take any action, you are going to have to hope that you are lucky and remember what the Grasshopper said: “Luck is the short end of statistical probability.”

So what prevents someone from taking action? Fear immediately comes to mind - Fear of failure, fear of rejection, fear of reality, etc. When fear shows up, hoping cannot be far behind. “I hope I don’t fail.” “I hope I don’t get rejected.” “I hope this isn’t really happening.” Hope becomes a security blanket that has no threads when you hide from fear. It’s sort of like the thing children do when they close their eyes and hope other people don’t see them. And as we have all learned, they will still be there when we open our eyes.

And contrary to what some athletes say after victory, I don’t think God wants all the credit for what you hope for and accomplish. That’s why he created you, so that you can accomplish many things in your life and reap the rewards. God gets all the recognition he needs through you – his creation. Way back when, God was hoping for someone like you and then the hoping stopped and he put together an action plan that actually created this wonderful person known as you.

Hope is a non-action word. Hope is not a productive way of life. Hope is an idea starter, a catalyst – nothing more. Life requires action. And when you decide to take action, make sure that it’s in manageable pieces that you can replicate until you see the fruition of your hope.

Please continue to hope for whatever tickles your fancy and then use the sense that God gave you and take some action. Put a plan in place and take the appropriate steps. And planning to take action reduces fear by instilling confidence through forethought. The following story emphasizes this message.

I have two nephews who are accomplished, decorated Navy Seals. An Admiral addressing my younger nephew’s college graduating class in California stated that he thought the reason that my nephew and five other Navy Seals graduated at the top of their class was because of their Seal training. He went on to say that this training teaches them how to plan and complete each step before taking the next one and how this methodology creates successful missions no matter how challenging. He never used the word “Hope.”

I “hope” I have taken some of the sting out of the words of Fernando Flores because that was my starting point – to put his words into a context that gives hope it’s due and brings action out from under the covers.

I hope you’ll peruse my website http://JohnMorganHypnosis.com
and find it as a starting point for what you want to accomplish.

All the best,

John
